School Uniform

Introduction

Our policy is that all children should wear clothing that is in keeping with a purposeful learning ethos. 

Aims 

Our policy is based on the belief that a school uniform:

• promotes a sense of pride in the school
• engenders a feeling of belonging
• is practical and distinctive
• identifies the children with the school
• is not distracting in class (as normal plain clothes may be)
• makes children feel equal to one another in terms of appearance
• reflects the sense both of community
• is regarded as suitable, and good value for money, by most parents

Clothing 

The Summer uniform should be worn from the February Half Term until the October Half Term.

The Winter uniform should be worn from October Half Term until February Half Term.

We expect the children at St. Luke's to wear school uniform as follows:

Winter Uniform

• Navy blue tie with two stripes (KS1 Elastic tie) and (KS2 Clip on tie)
• Navy blazer with sky blue piping with ‘Dove’ logo
• Navy V-neck jumper/cardigan (navy with sky blue strip and ‘Dove’ logo)
• White shirt/blouse
• Navy school trousers
• Navy school skirt (box pleat) or pinafore (box pleat)
• Navy tights or socks (plain)

Summer Uniform

Girls

• Navy Gingham ‘box pleat’ dress with cardigan (navy with sky blue strip and ‘Dove’ logo)
• White tights or socks (plain or Navy Gingham trim)

Boys

• Navy school shorts
• Navy socks

Short sleeved shirt/blouse can be worn without a tie if the shirt/blouse does not have a top button.

Blazers

Pupils in Year 1 and Year 2, although supplied with a blazer, pupils will not be required to wear it during the school day.

Pupils starting in the reception class in September are expected to wear the new school uniform however the blazer is optional. 

Pupils in Year 3 - 6 are expected to wear their blazers. 

Optional wear:

• ‘Dove’ cap or woolly hat (or plain navy)
• Girls are able to wear navy lycra shorts under their skirts or dresses
• Girls are allowed to wear plain navy headscarves for religious reasons.

Bags: Book bag (essential for pupils in Reception, Year 1 & Year 2) or shoulder bag/rucksack (all blue with ‘Dove’ logo).

Available for outdoor wear only:

Navy, dark or black school coat (plain)

Shoes:  All children are required to wear sensible, comfortable black shoes without heels for the school day. The wearing of any kind of trainers, other than specifically for outdoor PE and games activities is not allowed.

Physical Education (PE)

All children must have PE kit permanently in school to change into:

Navy zip fleece sweat top (with Dove logo)

Navy jogging bottoms (with Dove logo)

House colour T-Shirt (St. George - Red, St. David - Yellow, St. Patrick - Green and St. Andrew - Blue).

Plain black plimsolls/trainers

PE kit should be brought into school on a Monday and taken home on Fridays to be washed

Swimming  

Children in Year 3 attend swimming lessons as part of their curriculum. 

There is no school swimming uniform, however, the staff at the swimming pool are very clear about the clothing and equipment that children are required to bring:- 

• Swimming trunks (long shorts are not allowed)
• One piece swimsuits (two piece swimsuits are not allowed)
• A suitable towel (must be dry and large enough for your child to dry themselves)
• Goggles
• Swim cap

The following items are not school uniform and therefore should not be worn: 

• Layered skirts
• Pattern socks
• Jogging bottoms
• Leggings, shorts or long sleeve tops that are visible underneath pupil’s shirt/blouses, skirts or dresses
• Fabric shoes
• Open toed sandals
• Trainers
• Boots (pupils must have school shoes to wear in school)
• Caps or coloured hats
• Hoodies

Jewellery

No jewellery is allowed to be worn for safety reasons with the exception of small stud earrings (plain).  Please make sure your child does not wear any other jewellery, as it will have to be removed when they reach school.  Watches can be worn.

The school will not be held responsible for any jewellery that is brought into school, either worn by a child, in their belongings or handed in.

Personal Appearance 

Strictly no nail varnish or tattoos.

Pupils should wear their uniform smartly and with pride i.e. shirts and blouses should be tucked in.  Jumpers and blazers should be hung in their classrooms or put away and not be tied around their waists or shoulders, which can look scruffy. 

Hair Styles 

Hair should be conventionally cut, well groomed, neither too short nor too long and not shaped or shaved into patterns or motifs. Moderate layering is acceptable but a sharp dividing line between long and short sections is not permitted.

Hair should be natural in colour and style: hair additives, fashion styles, Mohicans and streaks are specifically forbidden. Hair accessories should be limited to simple ribbons, bands or clips and restricted to basic colours of blue and/or white.

As fashion changes rapidly, the final interpretation of the dress code will be at the discretion of the Executive Head Teacher. 

Uniform Stockist 

To keep the uniform good value for money, most of the uniform (skirt, trousers, shirts, blouses etc) can be brought at most suppliers. 

Only the blazer, jumper and/or cardigan, tie, bookbags and PE kit need to be brought from School Wear United.

Please enquire about our pre-loved uniform scheme at the school office.

Labelling of Items

It is very important that all clothing should be clearly labelled with your child’s name.  This is especially important, as uniform items look similar and can easily be confused for another child’s.  

The school staff try to ensure that children try to look after their items but items do unfortunately get lost.  Please remind your child to look after their items especially when getting changed. 

The school cannot accept responsibility for any lost items. We understand that uniform does get mislaid and children have growth spurts.  If this is the case, please write into the office giving a date when you will be able to purchase new items.  These are not excuses for children not wearing the correct uniform for long periods. 

Role of the Class Teachers and Support Staff 

Set a good example in terms of dress

Remember that is our respective roles we serve the local community as a set of professionals

To remind children to wear the correct uniform and to look smart.

To complete school uniform reports for incorrect uniform or forgot / incorrect items of PE / Swimming kits. 

Role of the Office Staff 

In addition to the above

To complete school spot checks

Writing to parents informing them that their child is not wearing the correct uniform or not bringing in their PE / swimming kits.

Role of the Senior Leadership Team 

To ensure that pupils comply with the uniform policy agreed by the governing body.

Has a duty to enforce the school uniform throughout the school community, as part of the duty within maintenance of day to day discipline in the school.

Will speak to the parents of children who persistently do not wear the correct uniform or incorrect hair styles.

The school will follow DfE guidelines and not consider exclusion from the school where a pupil fails to comply with the school’s rules on uniform.    

Role of the Parents and Carers 

To ensure that their child / children adhere to the school’s uniform policy.

Ensure that they come to school in uniform everyday unless there are special circumstances such as non uniform days.

To ensure that all uniform is labelled correctly and clearly

The correct PE kit is brought into school on Mondays and collected on Fridays

To ensure that their child is wearing a suitable hair style.
